Whether you’re a football fan or not, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve heard of Pele, Neymar, Sócrates, Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi. When World Cup season rolls in, suddenly everyone and their grandmothers would be glued to their TV screens to witness the beautiful game no matter the time of day (or night).
But did you know that many of your football heroes (including the names above) started out in futsal?
The name futsal comes from the Spanish words fútbol sala which roughly translates to ‘hall football’. Inspired by Uruguay’s victory in the 1930 World Cup and gold medal wins in the Summer Olympics in the 20s, the game of futsal was created by a local teacher named Juan Gravier to accommodate the use of basketball courts for recreation in Young Men’s Christian Associations there.
The game rules are a mixture of regulations found in traditional football, basketball, water polo and handball. Due to the smaller pitch size compared to the normal football field, this new sport hybrid tests the technical skills of every player like ball control, quick thinking, dribbling and more.
What started out as a humble alternative to football, futsal grew so popular that it quickly spread throughout Latin America and soon, to the rest of the world.

Today, futsal is a sport played both locally and internationally. There are currently two governing bodies; Asociación Mundial de Fútbol de Salón (AMF) and Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). They also have affiliated regional organisations across the world including the Asian Football Confederation under AFC.
While futsal is a game people from all walks of life can participate, there are major tournaments for national teams or local clubs to compete. Even women play too, with their own international and regional championship leagues.
Futsal has also reached our shores with various events solely dedicated to the sport like the QuickFire 4-a-side Futsal Tournament at SAFRA Jurong. However, our local futsal scene is still very young as compared to overseas. Nonetheless, If you’re itching to play futsal with your friends, hit the pitch at SAFRA Tampines or join our tournament in March and celebrate the launch of our new futsal court at the Jurong club. It would be a great opportunity to mingle with the rest of this ever growing futsal community!
So gather your friends today and compete against other teams at the QuickFire 4-a-side Futsal Tournament. Check out our list of the top 10 futsal players in the world below for motivation to be crowned champion!
