Every New Year marks a new beginning. That is certainly the sentiment of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Asia Managing Director, Mark Fischer ahead of the brand’s eagerly anticipated mixed martial arts (MMA) spectacle here on Saturday. Alongside the launch of their new digital subscription service Fight Pass, the 10-bout flagship Singapore event heralds UFC first foray into the lucrative Southeast Asian market.
UFC Asia Managing Director, Mark Fischer heralds a new chapter for the brand!
Having established a foothold in China, Fischer is quick to point out that UFC Fight Night Singapore is the first of many upcoming events in the region. With promising Asian MMA fighters springing up like weeds, Fischer stress that UFC is committed in building a platform for such emerging talents with 15 new fighters making their UFC debut. As such, there is a distinctly Asian flavour to the American organisation’s maiden offering at the Marina Bay Sands!
The up-and-coming MMA stars will have their eyes on the UFC gold!
Having caught UFC’s eye in his audition for The Ultimate Fighter: China, local MMA combatant Royston Wee will be making his Octagon debut as he takes on Philippines’ Dave ‘The Scarecrow’ Galera in a historic bout. The first ever all Southeast Asian fight will see the 27 year old Wee shouldering the lofty expectation of the local supporters. But, he isn’t the only one that the home crowd supporters will be cheering on.
Local MMA fighter Royston Wee will be making UFC history in his first match!
Representing renowned local gym Evolve MMA, Singapore-based fighter Leandro ‘Brodinho’ Issa will have his hands full as he faces the hard hitting American Russell Doane. The 30 year old Brazilian submission specialist will be out to stop his opponent’s three-match winning spree and build on his own 11 victories!
However, the neutrals will no doubt be drawn to the main card meeting between former Strikeforce champion Tarec ‘Sponge’ Saffiedine and rising South Korean star Hyun-Gyu ‘The Ace’ Lim. Saffiedine, the accomplished 27 year old Belgian grappler, will need to pull out all his tricks to withstand the whirlwind of pounding fists and kicks that have earned Lim his seven-match winning streak.
Belgian grappler Saffiedine will have to survive the hard hitting Lee to attain victory!
Finally, there is even a touch of glamour as soon-to-be Hollywood star Tatsuya ‘The Crusher’ Kawajiri squares off with young upstart Sean Soriano. The 35 year old Japanese MMA veteran, having tasted victories for his last five bouts, will be hoping that experience triumphs over finesse as the all-rounder Soriano is equally adept at grinding out a submission or knockout victory!
Will The Crusher’s experience be enough to stop Soriano’s youthful finesse?
So, who will emerge victorious from UFC’s famed Octagon? No one knows for sure. But come this weekend, 20 warriors will fight tooth and claw in the caged arena while propelling UFC into a new chapter of their illustrious history!
