With over 50 marathons happening in Singapore in the later part of the year, including the upcoming SAFRA Singapore Bay Run, it seems that Singaporeans consider running a top sporting activity. Let's take a look at how running and other forms of exercises not only boost your health but also adds years to your life in this series of Feel Good.
Did you know that an hour of running may equate to seven extra hours of life? So, a few minutes of physical activity a day can make a difference to your health. But if you feel that an hour of running is daunting, why not start small?
15 minute workouts
Even a short sweat session might be of benefit. Just 15 minutes of daily activity, like brisk walking, may add three years to life expectancy. If you're strapped for time, take that 15 minutes at lunchtime - brisk walk instead of taking the bus for your chicken rice. Then, on your way home, alight a stop earlier and walk off those calories.
A little bit of exercise a day is a good way to start increasing your stamina for the upcoming SAFRA Singapore Bay Run. If you haven't started training already, start with tips from SAFRA Running Club today!
Take the stairs
What is so special about climbing stairs? In 2008, a Swiss study concluded that people who switched from escalators and elevators to stairs, increased their life expectancy. You know that foreboding feeling when you look at the flight of stairs as you exit the train (especially when the escalator is just next to it) - start by stepping right up or down! Conquer the laziness with those daunting stairs and increase gradually. Your heart will be thankful for that!
Bike your way around town
Biking is a great way to squeeze exercise into your day, enjoy the outdoors and save on petrol money. With bike sharing programmes like Mobike, it gets easier to stay fit. Every day cycling may add an average of six months to your life expectancy. If you are looking for cycling kakis or want to explore new routes, why not join SAFRA's Cycling Club for our weekly Friday night rides?
Take a swim
For the ultimate anti-aging workout, take a dive in the pool. One of the key benefits of exercise is improvement of cardiovascular health. Swimming as a water-based activity has lower risk of injury and as a bonus, full body toning and joint-friendly cardio. Bring your family down and enjoy our newly renovated swimming pools at SAFRA Mount Faber and SAFRA Yishun!
