SAFRA in the 90s: A SAFRA45 Special

SAFRA in the 90s: A SAFRA45 Special

2017 is the year we celebrate SAFRA45. To mark this special occasion, we will be featuring SAFRA related trivia each month as we count down from 1972 - 2017!

In the fifth part of our SAFRA45 Special, we take a stroll down memory lane from 1992 to 1996. We relive the nostalgic memories of the 90's National Healthy Lifestyle Campaign that started with the Sheares Bridge Run to the National Speed-Climbing Championship.

1992: The Run of a Lifetime

In celebration of the National Healthy Lifestyle Campaign, SAFRA organised the very first Sheares Bridge Run that attracted some 14,000 participants on 21 Jun 1992. SAFRA achieved another first when we organised the National Rock-Wall Climbing at Marina Promenade, held on 19 Sep 1992. The event attracted 284 climbers as young as eight years old to take part in SAFRA's adventure programme.

1993: Keeping the Spirit Alive

SAFRA celebrated the 17th SEA Games by forming a running contingent for the Games Torch Relay. The SEA Games Torch arrived at SAFRA Bukit Merah and was ignited by the Guest-of-Honour, Dr Lee Boon Yang on 10 Jun 1993. 18 proud SAFRA sportsmen and women also represented the nation in the SEA Games. The year also saw a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Civil Defence Reservists Association (CDANS), Singapore Police Force Reservists Association (SPANS) and SAFRA to allow members mutual use of certain facilities at each club.

1994: From Reservists to NSman

'Celebrating 25' Variety Concert to commemorate 25 years of Operationally Ready National Service

1994 marked 25 years of Operationally Ready National Service. It also marked the change of the term "Reservists" to "Operationally Ready National Servicemen" or "NSman" to reflect the operational effectiveness of NSmen. In celebration of this milestone, SAFRA organised 'Celebrating 25' Variety Concert from 11 -13 Nov 1994. The year also marked the launch of SAFRA Radio and Power 98FM officiated by Dr Lee Boon Yang, then Minister for Defence. When SAFRA Radio went on 31 Oct 1994, it marked SAFRA's first foray into broadcasting, which allowed the organisation to strengthen bonds among NSmen, NSFs and regulars through music, news and information.

1995: The Year of Giving

Festive cheer at SAFRA Toa Payoh

SAFRA provided opportunities for members to reach out and help the less fortunate through charity events. The official launch of the SAFRA-Oriental Emporium Lunar New Year Fair at Tampines brought cheer to 150 old folks from six homes when Mr Matthias Yao Chih, former Senior Parliamentary Secretary (Defence) and President of SAFRA presented oranges and goodie bags to the elderly guests. At SAFRA Toa Payoh, 300 senior citizens were invited for Chinese New Year celebrations organised by SAFRA Community Services Club (SAFRACS).

1996: Supporting a Healthy Lifestyle

The first-ever National Speed-Climbing Championship

1996 saw the launch of the SAFRA website as an additional communication channel for members. The SAFRA homepage was officially launched by Mr Matthias Yao Chih, former SAFRA President on 24 Nov 1996. To reward loyal and supportive members, SAFRA introduced "Life Membership" for members with at least 20 years of ordinary membership. In conjunction with the National Healthy Lifestyle Campaign, SAFRA organised its first Runway Cycling '96 at Paya Lebar Airbase and National Speed-Climbing Championship '96.
