Why Kids Should Start Developing Art & Technical Skills Now

A Plutarch quote for inspiration to keep learning.

A Plutarch quote for inspiration to keep learning.

“The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.” – Plutarch

It's natural to be curious about the world and how it works, especially for kids. However, it's not enough to just feed the mind with knowledge. You need to keep it inspired to improve brain power. Constant exploring encourages this love of learning, which helps you become motivated to continue striving for success in life.

The best part about learning is that it doesn't only happen in books! From artistic skills like drawing and sculpting to technical ones like programming toy robots and building chuck gliders, there are plenty of ways outside the classroom to keep your mind sharp.

Learning is a lifelong habit, so it's important to begin training from young. Here are 5 reasons why your kids should start developing art and technical skills now!

Stay sharp!

1. Focus better

Unless you're creating abstract art, painting a picture requires you to physically focus on your subject. By examining for details, you're training your eyes to look and perceive a lot of information in order to translate it onto your canvas. Over time, this enhances long-term visual memory and visual imagination.

2. Improve non-verbal communication

Dancing is a great art skill for self-expression. Here, you can learn the importance of body language while understanding how your body moves to the beat of music. Plus, it's a fun way to stay active!

3. Develop higher-order thinking skills

How to solve a tricky math problem? How to apply theory knowledge to practical science? How to turn clay or plasticine into sculptures? What you need is, higher-order thinking skills that enable you to think deeply and rationally to achieve your desired results.

The three skills of higher-order thinking are:-

a. Critical thinking: When you reflect on what you've learned and then decide what to believe or do about the knowledge.

b. Retain and transfer: Remember the piece of information, understand it and then apply knowledge in practical tasks.

c. Problem solving: Analyse information, critically evaluate ideas, communicate them effectively and formulate creative alternatives to reach a solution.

Higher-order thinking skills are essential in every part of daily life, including expressing a logical argument, debating and persuading.

4. Relieve emotional stress

Learning can be stressful but it doesn't always have to be! Whether you're learning something new or have been studying the same subject for a while, interest is the most important factor in learning. Situational interest (a temporary and spontaneous interest due to environmental factors) is first developed and will increase when there is more engagement during learning. As it increases, personal interest (a less spontaneous interest that is activated internally) is then developed. This creates an overall positive impact on learning, boosting motivation and chances of success. The happier you are, the less pressure you feel to learn!

Using engaging real-life learning materials is a fantastic way to sustain interest. Blowing bubbles may be a simple fun game, but did you know you can study a number of science concepts from it? You can learn about elasticity, surface tension, chemistry, light and geometry just by studying bubbles.

5. The power of perseverance

Failure is part of the journey to success. So don't be discouraged if you have yet to achieve your goals (like successfully baking a cake!). Take it as a challenge to prove that you can do it! With a positive attitude, you will want to dedicate time and effort in your project.
