Young Local Stars – Where are they now?

These are some of the familiar faces you saw growing up - when you watch a local drama or show on TV. But, where are they now, after achieving success in their breakout roles? Let’s find out!


Joakim Gomez

Born: Unknown. (27 years old)

Claim to Fame: 5th place in the local reality TV competition Singapore Idol Season 2 (2006). Then only 17, Joakim’s magnetic charm won the hearts (and votes) of many fan girls despite receiving criticisms from the judges for his weak vocals.

Now: Currently a 987FM producer and presenter, Joakim is now one half of the hilarious duo from ‘The Bro Code with Gerald and Joakim’ segment. He also hosts numerous national and corporate events.


Ng Chee Yang

Born: December 10, 1989 (26 years old)

Claim to Fame: Overall Champion of Campus Superstar Season 1 (2006). Representing his alma mater, Hwa Chong Institution, Chee Yang won the hearts of many with his smooth renditions of Chinese pop songs, eventually winning the nationwide singing competition.

Now: Residing in New York City, he is now a seasoned theater performer on Broadway. If you’re in Boston, do look out for his latest performance in Shrek the Musical (2015), starring as Pinocchio.


Julie Tan

Born: September 22, 1992 (23 years old)

Claim to Fame: First appearing in the showbiz scene in the 2009 hit local telemovie, The Promise as Lee Shanshan, Julie subsequently took up roles in other local movies; Judgement Day (2013), That Girl in Pinafore (2013) and popular TV drama 96C Café (2013).

Now: Besides balancing her busy schedule as an actress and model, she is also a spokesperson for L’Oreal Professionnel. She was recently nominated as one of the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes in the Star Awards 2015.


Shawn Tok

Born: January 8, 1994 (21 years old)

Claim to Fame: Overall Champion of Campus Superstar Season 2 (2007). At age 13, Shawn from Loyang Secondary School is the youngest contestant to win the title.

Now: Studying in the University of Queensland in Australia, Shawn enjoys the full life of a student, indulges in scuba diving and enjoys hanging out with friends (like we all do!).

Born: August 7, 1995 (20 years old)

Claim to Fame: Rose to stardom for starring in local movie, 881 as Young Big Papaya (2007) and the English Sitcom Fighting Spiders (2009), as Soon Lee’s bona fide girlfriend, Yi Ling.

Now: An actress and model, Kimberly performed in a number of hit Chinese TV drama series and is a spokesperson for brands including Norton 360 and Osim. Recently, she was nominated for favourite female character category in Star Awards 2015 for her role in World at your Feet (2014).
