5 Speed Daters You Don't Want to Meet

Speed dating can be a fun alternative when you do not have the luxury of time to find “the one”. What would usually take a number of months might take you just one night to meet your new sweetheart.

This concept began from a Jewish community in Los Angeles and word of its success quickly spread throughout the rest of the world. It is now nothing new to our sunny shores either. In fact, Singapore just broke the record for the most number of singles at a speed dating event earlier this year. The service typically allows you to date numerous individuals within an hour, talking to each person for about five minutes. When the time is up, the men will move on to the next table where another lady awaits. This will repeat until every man has dated each woman. All the while, they will record down whom they really like, just want to be friends with or not all. At the end of it, their comments will be matched to see who is interested in each other.

Just like regular dating, you will get to meet all sorts of characters. It is important to be prepared with good conversational topics and putting on more charm than usual won’t hurt too. Of course the good ol’ “Be Yourself” advice works but in the dating rush, who wouldn’t get a little overenthusiastic at times?

We put together a list of the worst five people you don’t want to meet at a speed dating service. As long as you don’t act like one of them, you’re good.

1. The Chatterbox

Dating someone who can carry a conversation with you without much prompting or giving moments of awkward silence is ideal. It’s nice to be able to discuss a particular topic, sharing views and ideas with someone else who has interest in it. But you only get five minutes for each person so use the time wisely! Save the conversation by taking turns. It helps to keep things interesting as well.

2. The Snob

There is no doubt that everyone is entitled to their opinions. Having a strong stance regarding a certain issue can make you look confident and people respect that. It’s perfectly fine to hold friendly debates now and then as it encourages you to open up your mind to new possibilities. But when doing so, be gracious. You don’t want to start offending someone just because you disagree.

3. The Wanderer

When you’re on a date, engage yourself in the activity and give them your full attention. It is simply rude if you start to wander off thinking about what you need to finish up at work the next day or letting yourself get distracted by someone else walking past and checking them out instead. Put away all distractions like your mobile phone and don’t ever answer calls or text messages unless urgent. That is a huge no-no!

4. The Inappropriate

A cute date with a good sense of humour is a perfect combination. Flirting can be such a tease as it draws interest in someone, making the other seem so much more attractive. But too many jokes can make you feel like you’re at a comedy club instead of a romantic date. Be funny at the right times during the date because another downside to it is that they might just stop taking you seriously altogether. There goes your future date!

5. The Creep

In order to make a date successful, you need to feel attracted to the person who is sitting across the table from you. If there is no spark, there may not be hope for a possible relationship at all. So when someone really hot comes along and you find yourself wondering how you get so lucky, take a deep breath and slow your role, playa. Try not to be too forward as you might scare them away. Even if you believe in your heart of hearts that you two are meant to be together, be patient and get to know them first before taking that next step.

So now that you know what not to do when it comes to speed dating or dating in general, are you feeling more confident now? With tons of parties lined up this time of year like the Match Hatters Party at Zouk, go ahead and meet new people. You might just meet that special someone in time for New Year’s!
