I’m someone who enjoys trying new activities, so when I had the opportunity to visit Climb Central at SAFRA Choa Chu Kang, I was excited to give rock climbing a go. At the same time, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. While climbing looked fun, the thought of being several metres above the ground made me a little nervous.

As it turned out, rock climbing was much more challenging than I had expected, but it was also far more rewarding.

It Looked Easier Than It Really Was

Since it was my first time rock climbing, I didn’t know what to expect. Looking around Climb Central, the walls didn’t seem too intimidating. I even noticed children climbing effortlessly, which made me think it couldn’t be that difficult.

Once it was my turn, however, I quickly realised it wasn’t as simple as it looked.

The start of the climb was manageable and relatively easy. But as I made my way higher, it suddenly hit me just how far away the ground was. Being several metres up was intimidating, but the hardest part wasn’t climbing up… it was coming back down.

Learning To Trust The Rope

The instructor told me to lean back, trust the rope and slowly push myself away from the wall. Even though I knew the safety equipment would support me, it still took a lot of courage to let go and lean back.

After my first climb, I realised descending wasn’t as scary as I had imagined. The initial sensation of leaning backwards and “falling” was unsettling, but the rope safely lowered me down the wall. With each climb, I became more comfortable with the height and started trying walls with different difficulty levels.

Rock climbing was also far more physically demanding than I expected. My arms and legs definitely got a workout, and by the end of the session, I could really feel the effort.

Final Thoughts

Trying rock climbing at Climb Central turned out to be an incredibly rewarding experience. Not only did it help me become more confident with heights, but it also showed me that climbing is a fun, challenging and engaging way to stay active. Reaching the top of the wall for the first time was an exhilarating feeling that made all the effort worthwhile.

Although I was nervous at first, I became more confident with every climb, and the experience is one I’ll remember for a long time. I would definitely return and recommend it to anyone looking to try something new, especially if you’ve always wanted to challenge yourself or overcome a fear of heights.
