Careers today rarely follow a straight path. Industries evolve, technologies disrupt and professionals must adapt. For NSmen and SAFRA members juggling work, family and national commitments, returning to school can feel like a bold, even risky, move. The SAFRA Bond-Free Education Scheme exists to make that move more accessible.

More than just financial assistance, the scheme supports lifelong learning without tying recipients to employment bonds after graduation. That flexibility is increasingly valuable in a world where adaptability, not longevity in a single role, defines career resilience.

Since its inception in 1994, the scheme has supported SAFRA members pursuing diplomas, degrees and master’s programmes across reputable institutions. With more than 90 placements offered across intakes, members can choose pathways aligned with their professional ambitions, whether advancing in their current field or pivoting into something entirely new.

Clear Deadlines to Note

For this intake, applicants should take note of the following:

              •            Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS): Applications close 15 March 2026

              •            All other participating institutions: Applications close 31 March 2026

Missed this round? The next application window will run from 1 August to 30 September 2026, offering another opportunity to plan ahead.

Learning That Fits Real Life

A key strength of the scheme is its alignment with working adults. Many supported programmes are structured for part-time study, allowing NSmen and SAFRA members to balance academic commitments alongside careers and reservist duties.

This flexibility reflects a broader shift in education. Learning is no longer a one-time milestone completed in early adulthood — it is continuous. For NSmen, who are trained to remain operationally ready, staying professionally ready is just as important.

The scheme lowers one of the biggest barriers to returning to school: cost. By easing tuition expenses, it allows members to focus on learning and long-term growth without being constrained by financial stress.

Following are testimonials from SAFRA members who went through the scheme — read their stories and be inspired to apply for it too!

Real Stories of Reinvention

SAFRA Bond-Free Education Scheme Luqman Hakim Bin Azimi

For Luqman Hakim Bin Azimi, 29, enrolling in the Bachelor of Arts in Sociology at SUSS was a step towards expanding his perspective and career prospects while working as a Programme Executive. With support from the Bond-Free Education Scheme, he was able to manage work and studies without the added pressure of tuition costs weighing heavily on him.

Balancing multiple responsibilities required discipline and structure. Through careful planning and consistent time management, Luqman stayed on track academically while maintaining work commitments. His advice to others considering the leap is simple: “There will never be a perfect time — all you really have is today.”

SAFRA Bond-Free Education Scheme Thiah Hao Ting Russell Baligod

Similarly, Thiah Hao Ting Russell Baligod, 25, pursued a Bachelor of Science in Finance at SUSS while building his career as a Credit Analyst at Mizuho Bank. Determined to invest in himself, he adopted structured study techniques such as time-blocking and the Pomodoro method to juggle deadlines and deliver at work.

For Hao Ting, the scheme removed financial uncertainty and allowed him to concentrate on achieving academic excellence. His belief: “Education is the best investment in yourself.”

SAFRA Bond-Free Education Scheme Calvin Neo

Not all journeys are linear. Calvin Neo, 36, made a courageous mid-career switch into social service, enrolling in the Master of Guidance and Counselling at James Cook University Singapore. The transition came with a significant pay cut and family responsibilities, making financial support crucial.

The scheme helped ease that burden, allowing Calvin to focus on studies and his new role in community outreach. Reflecting on his journey, he shares that the support eliminated one of the biggest obstacles to returning to school. For him, rediscovering the joy of learning reaffirmed that it is never too late to pursue meaningful work.

Beyond Individual Growth

While the impact is personal, the ripple effects are national. An adaptable and skilled workforce strengthens Singapore’s economic resilience. When NSmen upgrade and reskill, they contribute not only to their organisations but also to broader societal stability.

This aligns closely with the principles of Total Defence. Economic and psychological resilience depend on individuals who are confident, capable and prepared for change. By empowering NSmen to grow, the SAFRA Bond-Free Education Scheme supports this long-term readiness.

Most importantly, the scheme reinforces values ingrained during National Service: discipline, perseverance and adaptability. Just as servicemen train to stay mission-ready, continuous education ensures they remain future-ready.

A Partnership for the Future

Ultimately, the SAFRA Bond-Free Education Scheme represents a partnership. SAFRA provides the platform and financial support, while NSmen and SAFRA members bring the commitment and drive to pursue growth.

In a rapidly evolving economy, the ability to pivot may be the most powerful form of preparedness. Whether advancing within a profession or embarking on a new path, NSmen who invest in lifelong learning strengthen both themselves and the nation.

Interested applicants should take note of the 15 March 2026 deadline for SUSS and the 31 March 2026 deadline for other institutions. Those who require more time can look ahead to the next application window from 1 August to 30 September 2026.

In a world defined by change, reinvention is not optional — it is essential. Through the SAFRA Bond-Free Education Scheme, NSmen are equipped to embrace that change with confidence.
