If you’ve completed Basic Military Training, chances are you’ll experience a few moments of déjà vu at the SAFRA Fitness Festival 2026.
The festival’s flagship FitX Challenge isn’t just another obstacle race. Designed as an NS-inspired fitness experience, it blends functional fitness with familiar military movements, challenging participants across eight stations that test strength, endurance, agility and mental resilience. Whether you’re an active NSman looking to prove you’ve still got it or someone who simply wants to experience a taste of military-style training, every obstacle reflects the values that underpin National Service and Total Defence: teamwork, resilience, preparedness and the collective responsibility of keeping Singapore strong. While the challenge may be fun and competitive, it also serves as a reminder that physical readiness remains an important pillar of Total Defence.
Here are five FitX Challenge stations that will instantly remind NSmen of their time in uniform, and why they’re just as satisfying to conquer today.

If there’s one movement guaranteed to unlock memories of BMT, it’s the leopard crawl.
Staying low while moving quickly isn’t exactly the easiest way to cover ground, especially when your shoulders and core start protesting halfway through. During NS, it was often about staying below the line of sight while navigating obstacles. At FitX Challenge, you’ll tackle a 20m leopard crawl that demands coordination, mobility and determination rather than tactical survival.
The good news? There’s no muddy field, soaked uniform or sergeant shouting at you to “get lower”. Instead, you’ll be racing against the clock and perhaps your friends.
It’s a surprisingly effective full-body workout that engages your shoulders, hips, core and legs all at once, proving that some military movements remain timeless fitness exercises.

Remember scaling walls that once seemed impossibly tall?
FitX Challenge recreates that familiar challenge with the 2m Apex Climb and Low Wall, two separate stations which invite participants to rediscover the confidence and technique required to get over an obstacle efficiently. The principles haven’t changed much over the years. It’s still about using momentum wisely, trusting your grip and committing fully once you make your move.
For those entering the team categories, these two different challenges also capture one of the defining aspects of NS training: helping one another succeed.
Just as section mates once offered a boost over an obstacle or shouted encouragement from the other side, teammates at FitX Challenge can motivate each other to keep moving when fatigue starts to set in.
It’s a reminder that sometimes the fastest way forward is together.

No NS-inspired challenge would be complete without a shooting component.
Instead of live firing, FitX Challenge incorporates a Laser Shooting station where participants must score 15 hits before continuing the course.
The challenge isn’t simply about accuracy.
By the time competitors arrive here, elevated heart rates and tired muscles make it surprisingly difficult to steady your breathing and maintain focus. Anyone who has experienced marksmanship training will recognise the familiar lesson: controlling your breathing often matters just as much as aiming well.
It’s a refreshing mental reset in the middle of an otherwise physically demanding course, rewarding composure over brute strength.

Many NSmen remember carrying heavy loads during route marches, casualty evacuations or physical training sessions.
The 50kg tyre flip captures that same spirit of functional strength, replacing traditional gym exercises with a movement that requires power, technique and coordination.
At first glance, flipping a tyre looks straightforward. In reality, success depends on driving through your legs, engaging your hips and maintaining good body positioning, not simply relying on upper-body strength.
It’s one of those challenges that quickly teaches an important lesson familiar to anyone who’s served: working smarter usually beats working harder.

Love it or dread it, the 2.4km run remains one of the most recognisable fitness milestones for generations of Singaporean men.
At FitX Challenge, the run returns, but with a difference.
Rather than being the sole event, it forms the last part of the challenge where endurance must be balanced with strength, agility and recovery in the grand finale. That means pacing and saving up your energy for this final challenge becomes even more important.
It’s a reminder that overall fitness isn’t defined by a single event. True readiness comes from being able to perform across multiple disciplines, a philosophy that’s equally relevant whether you’re serving NS or pursuing your personal fitness goals.

While the NS-inspired stations may bring back fond, or occasionally painful memories, FitX Challenge isn’t about recreating military training.
Instead, it celebrates the qualities that National Service develops: resilience, discipline, teamwork and the willingness to keep pushing even when the finish line still feels far away.
Alongside the signature NS-inspired obstacles, participants will also take on rowing, box jumps and other functional fitness stations that round out the experience into a true test of all-round athleticism. The event welcomes individuals as well as pairs and trios, making it accessible whether you’re chasing a personal best or reliving old memories with your former section mates.
So if you’ve ever wondered whether you’ve still got what it takes, or simply want to see how today’s fitness challenges compare with those unforgettable days in green, the FitX Challenge offers the perfect opportunity.
After all, some lessons from NS never leave you. They just find new ways to challenge you.
