New on Screen May 2026

May 2026’s movie line-up delivers a strikingly diverse cinematic slate, spanning high-octane spectacle, imaginative animation, and gripping drama, headlined by the return of brutal tournament combat in Mortal Kombat II (7 May), where Earthrealm’s champions face escalating stakes against Shao Kahn in an even larger, more mythic arena of chaos and combat. Genre boundaries are playfully upended in The Sheep Detectives (7 May), a whimsical yet thoughtful mystery where an unlikely flock unravels a human crime with surprising emotional insight, while family audiences are swept into fantastical adventure with Tom and Jerry: Forbidden Compass (7 May), which reimagines the iconic rivalry through a vibrant, magical world of new dangers and discovery. On the darker end of the spectrum, Hokum (21 May) offers an atmospheric descent into folklore-laced horror, blending psychological unease with haunting storytelling, while the galaxy-spanning legacy of Star Wars expands on the big screen in The Mandalorian & Grogu (21 May), bringing heart, humour and heroic adventure to a larger cinematic canvas. Rounding out the month, Pressure (28 May) delivers a taut, nerve-shredding historical drama set against the tense hours leading to D-Day, where human judgment and uncertainty collide on a world-changing scale. Together, these movies make this month a dynamic celebration of storytelling across genres, tones, and worlds at the theatres.

Mortal Kombat II

Release Date: 7 May 2026
Starring: Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Joe Taslim

Mortal Kombat II arrives as an exciting continuation of the 2021 reboot, doubling down on the franchise’s signature mix of brutal combat, supernatural lore and fan-favourite characters. Directed by Simon McQuoid, the film brings back Earthrealm’s champions while introducing iconic figures like Johnny Cage, as they face the looming threat of Shao Kahn, a tyrant whose rise could spell the end of their world. With a larger ensemble cast led by Karl Urban alongside returning stars, the sequel promises to expand the mythology with more outlandish elements, deeper character arcs and even more visceral fight sequences which are iconic in the beloved game franchise. The film positions itself not just as a continuation, but as a course correction, embracing the unapologetic “weirdness” and spectacle that fans expect, while aiming to deliver a more emotionally engaging and narratively cohesive experience within its chaotic, blood-soaked universe.

The Sheep Detectives

Release Date: 7 May 2026

Starring: Hugh Jackman, Emma Thompson, Bryan Cranston

In an era saturated with formulaic whodunnits, The Sheep Detectives arrives as a gleefully offbeat reinvention of the genre, one that swaps trench coats for wool and hardboiled sleuths for surprisingly perceptive livestock. Directed by Kyle Balda and written by Craig Mazin, the film leans into its absurd premise: a flock of sheep solving the murder of their beloved shepherd, without ever treating it as a mere gimmick. Instead, it uses the animals’ outsider perspective to gently satirise human logic, ego, and investigative fallibility, all while delivering a genuinely engaging mystery. Anchored by Hugh Jackman and an eclectic ensemble of human and voice talent, the film balances warmth, wit, and a touch of melancholy, particularly in its portrayal of a pastoral world disrupted by violence. Adapted from Three Bags Full, it retains the novel’s philosophical undercurrent, questioning knowledge, perception, and the nature of storytelling, while packaging it in a family-friendly, visually inventive format. Quirky yet thoughtful, The Sheep Detectives doesn’t just ask who committed the crime; it asks who gets to understand it, and in doing so, proves that even the most unlikely detectives can offer the sharpest insights.

Tom and Jerry: Forbidden Compass

Release Date: 7 May 2026
Starring: Li Baixin, Mino Eek, Zhang Gang

Tom and Jerry: Forbidden Compass reimagines the timeless rivalry of Tom Cat and Jerry Mouse with a bold, adventure-filled twist, transporting the iconic duo into a richly imagined fantasy world sparked by a mysterious magical compass. Directed by Zhang Gang, the film which is a US and China co-production expands beyond its classic slapstick roots into a vibrant, cross-cultural spectacle, blending fast-paced comedy with sweeping visuals and an imaginative storyline that introduces new allies, foes, and fantastical settings. While longtime fans will still recognise the playful cat-and-mouse dynamic at its heart, this fully CGI outing opens the door to a new generation, offering a fresh, cinematic take on the beloved franchise. Energetic, visually ambitious, and packed with family-friendly charm, Tom and Jerry: Forbidden Compass proves that even after decades, this legendary duo can still surprise, delight, and embark on exciting new adventures.

Hokum

Release Date: 21 May 2026
Starring: Adam Scott, Peter Coonan, David Wilmot

Hokum, directed by Damian McCarthy, is an evocative and quietly compelling entry into modern horror, weaving together atmosphere, folklore, and emotional depth into a story that lingers well beyond its runtime. Starring Adam Scott as a novelist seeking solitude in the Irish countryside, the film unfolds within a secluded inn steeped in whispers of an ancient witch, setting the stage for a richly textured narrative that blends mystery with the supernatural. Rather than relying on overt shocks, Hokum draws viewers in with its immersive world-building and thoughtful pacing, allowing tension to build naturally while exploring themes of grief, imagination, and the unseen forces that shape our perceptions. Premiering at the South by Southwest Film & TV Festival, the film has been warmly received for its distinctive tone and storytelling, marking it as a standout for audiences seeking a more atmospheric and story-driven cinematic experience.

The Mandalorian & Grogu

Release Date: 21 May 2026
Starring: Pedro Pascal, Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White, Jonny Coyne

The Mandalorian & Grogu brings the beloved duo of Din Djarin and Grogu to the big screen for their first cinematic adventure, expanding the universe of the acclaimed Disney+ series into a larger, more cinematic scale of storytelling. Directed by Jon Favreau and co-written with Dave Filoni, the film continues the pair’s journey in the aftermath of the Empire’s fall, as they work alongside the New Republic to confront lingering galactic threats while deepening their signature bond of loyalty and found family. Combining action, humour and heart, the film features sweeping set pieces, new worlds, and familiar faces, enriching the journey with its blend of high-stakes missions and the emotional core between protector and child. A celebratory expansion of the Star Wars franchise, this theatrical release is set to offer fans an immersive experience that carries forward the spirit of the series while elevating it to blockbuster scale.

Pressure

Release Date: 28 May 2026
Starring: Andrew Scott, Brendan Fraser, Kerry Condon

Pressure is a gripping, high-stakes historical drama that turns a quiet, often overlooked moment in World War II into a tense, human-scale battle of intellect, instinct, and responsibility. Directed by Anthony Maras and led by powerful performances from Andrew Scott and Brendan Fraser, the film unfolds in the critical 72 hours before D-Day, when Allied leaders must decide whether to proceed with the largest amphibious invasion in history based on uncertain weather forecasts. What makes Pressure compelling is its focus on the people behind history: the meteorologists, advisors, and commanders whose quiet calculations carried world-altering consequences. Rather than relying on spectacle alone, the film builds its tension through sharp dialogue, moral urgency, and the ticking-clock intensity of decision-making under impossible conditions. Elegant, immersive, and deeply human, Pressure transforms a pivotal historical moment into a riveting cinematic experience about courage, uncertainty, and the weight of getting it right when everything is on the line.
