Passion is Volcanic Desire in Southeast Asian Art at National Gallery Singapore

Desire Unbound: National Gallery Singapore Explores the Erotic as a Force in Southeast Asian Art

Date: 24 April – 30 August 2026
Location: Level 4 Gallery, National Gallery Singapore
Entry: $5 (for Singaporeans and PRs) and $8 (for other nationalities). The exhibition is rated R18 and intended for visitors aged 18 and above; valid identification will be required at entry.

Held at National Gallery Singapore, Passion is Volcanic: Desire in Southeast Asian Art boldly reframes the conversation around the body, intimacy, and sexuality, positioning desire not as taboo but as a generative force in artistic practice. Opening on 24 April 2026, this R18 exhibition gathers over 70 works spanning pre-modern to contemporary periods, weaving together myth, modernity, and lived experience to reveal how artists across the region have navigated identity, power, and expression through the lens of the erotic. Inspired by Liu Kang’s reflections on desire as a catalyst for transformation, the show unfolds across three thematic sections, tracing how representations of the body evolve from sacred cosmologies to postcolonial reinterpretations and into deeply personal, socially charged narratives. In doing so, the Gallery delivers a thought-provoking, intellectually rigorous exhibition that challenges entrenched perspectives while inviting audiences to engage with Southeast Asian art in a more nuanced, embodied, and human way.
